Trump's Maneuvering Struggles to Resolve Middle East Dilemma; Gold Prices Fluctuate but Will Ultimately Break Out!

Spot gold briefly surged to near $4,082 on Monday before fluctuating and pulling back. On the surface, this appears to be just a minor correction, but it reflects a fierce tug-of-war among multiple forces: the repeatedly unresolved Middle East conflict, severe volatility in crude oil prices, a resurgence in inflation expectations, and the high uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve's policy path.

Gold has been fluctuating within a narrow range of $4,000 to $4,200 for over a month, with every geopolitical maneuver testing the market's patience and pricing logic. The direct trigger for this round of gold's surge and subsequent pullback was US President Trump's sudden halt of a large-scale strike plan against Iran over the weekend, claiming that both sides would hold negotiations. This statement rapidly pushed up gold prices in early Monday trading, as the market briefly interpreted it as a de-escalation of the conflict and a temporary relief in safe-haven demand. However, Iran quickly denied this. The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson explicitly stated that there are currently no negotiations with the US, nor are there any plans for meetings; all relevant negotiators remain in the country, and the only ongoing discussions are working-level contacts with Oman regarding the management of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump subsequently took to social media to accuse Iran of extreme hypocrisy, reiterating that the US has complete control over the Strait of Hormuz and warning that nothing will enter unless an agreement is reached or a full surrender occurs.

These contradictory statements almost perfectly replicate the conflict pattern of the past five months: Trump repeatedly threatens military action, only to retract the threats citing diplomatic engagement; meanwhile, since the breakdown of the memorandum of understanding in June, Iran has publicly refused direct negotiations with Washington. The conflict has fallen into a cycle of repeated escalation and temporary easing, constantly depleting safe-haven sentiment.

As a traditional safe-haven asset, gold struggles to build momentum for a sustained unilateral rally in an environment rife with fake news. Every temporary cooling of the conflict shifts some capital from gold to other risk assets, but once tensions flare up again, gold quickly finds support. The current market is more inclined to view the Middle East situation as persistent background noise rather than a decisive factor capable of immediately driving a breakout in gold prices.

Market Analysis:

Gold has seen a slight rebound on the 4-hour chart, with the MACD lines and histogram expanding near the zero line. This week, the ADP employment report and non-farm payroll (NFP) data will be released successively, with economists expecting about 80,000 new jobs added in July. This data will directly impact the market's judgment of the Federal Reserve's policy path. If the employment data is stronger than expected, it may further strengthen rate hike expectations, thereby putting short-term pressure on gold prices; if the data is weak, it may alleviate tightening concerns, providing gold with some breathing room.
